Sunday evening, I noticed that one of my cats, Sushi, was acting a little weird. She was scratching at her mouth, so much in fact that she had a little blood on her paw. She wasn't able to close her mouth all the way and you could tell that moving her mouth was painful for her. She had her little tongue hanging out when she wasn't moving as well, which isn't normal for her.
So, I called around Monday morning and got her an appointment with a vet for 3:00 that day. They figured out that she would need work done on her mouth as she had an infection on her gums. They told us that they may have to pull some of her teeth. They gave us an estimate of the worst case scenario, basically pulling all her teeth, which was just over $1000. Wow! Since Sushi could barely move her mouth, eating was out of the question so we had to agree for her sake.
Yesterday (Thursday), she went in for dental work. They removed 5 of her teeth! They said that two of them fell out on their own as they were working, so they didn't charge us for those. (We were thankful for that since they were $75 each to remove!) Three of them they had to pull. She has to eat soft foods the next 5-7 days then is basically back to normal. We were actually happy that it was only $600, but we did pay $250 on Monday as well. At least it wasn't over a thousand! (Trying to find the bright side here.)
Brandon was laughing at her once we picked her up. She seemed like she was drunk. She was a little unstable as she was walking and glossy-eyed. She was very restless as well. I spent the evening trying to get one of the pain killers they gave us on her gums, but she would smell it on my fingers and run. Cats sometimes are too smart.
Anyway, she seems to be doing great now! She is very affectionate and acting pretty much like normal. Her and her sister have even been playing this morning. She can definitely move her mouth better! From now on, we have to really watch her teeth and make sure that this doesn't happen again.
Here's a few pictures I took of Sushi this morning, just to show you how pretty she is:
