Sophie School: The Letter C

We finished up the letter C a while back, but I haven't had the energy and/or time to get on and blog about it!  While working with the letter C, I stopped focusing so much on a certain number and have just been focusing on numbers 1 through 5.  I also didn't have a particular color we worked on, though the folder for this lesson highlighted the color yellow.  We have just been working on all the colors.  We watch Signing Time 1-2 times a week, and happened to catch one about colors soon after beginning the C lessons.  We have begun signing colors while we review them, which is a lot during the day.  They are coming along!  I think signing something along with saying it makes Sophie catch on quicker as she has an action to put to the word.  She does better with actions, such as songs and most activities, which isn't surprising since she is a very active 1 year old!  She also doesn't speak most words very clearly yet, so having her sign the words makes me see if she's understanding something or not.  Plus, we are both learning another language and I think that's awesome!

Here's some of our activities:

We made a cactus out of a cucumber.  We just took a cucumber, cut it in half, then added some toothpicks.  All I had were colorful toothpicks, so they were quite colorful cacti!  Sophie loved this activity!  She did stab her palm on accident a few times, so she would then say "Ow!" but then quickly begin again.  She came back to this about 3 times during that day.  We did it in the morning (which is why she is still in her pajamas!) so she worked off and on all day to get it just right.
Saying "Ow!" after getting the end into her palm.

Such a look of concentration!

Showing me where she was stabbed by the toothpick.

My finished product and Sophie's mostly finished product.  I think she added more after this picture was taken.

To work on colors and counting, I made what I call the Counting Caterpillar.  Unfortunately, Sophie wasn't really too into it, but that's ok.  Maybe later we can use it again as I made sure to laminate it.

The Counting Caterpillar

Coloring cats to work on colors.  We signed with each of them.  Notice she needed to add green to the brown as well.  :)

Sequence cards.  She really isn't getting the sequence idea down yet, but she plays a little with the cards.

The next picture is just a group picture of her colorings.  She was really into the large cat on the top in the middle!  The bottom left is to work on shapes.  The bottom middle is for different pets.

Here is her folder for the letter C.  Sophie chose the colors for the caterpillar on the front and what order to put them in as she was helping me glue them on.
Front of her folder
Inside has a C poem about 5 crocodiles.  The verse for this lesson is "Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right." Ephesians 6:1.  Under the yellow flap she colored a banana, corn, and a chick yellow.

The back had the sign for C.  She caught onto this sign pretty quickly, but holds her arm on her forehead to form the C with her hand.  Not sure why, but I go with it.  :)
