In looking for different activities for Sophie to do, I ran across an idea of using a spice jar for some hand-eye-coordination work (not sure where the original idea is from, so please let me know if you find it so I can link to it!). I finally had finished off one of my spices and decided to try it. It was very simple to put together. I cleaned out the jar as best as I could to try to eliminate some of the smell as it was a garlic jar so smelled quite strong. I then took a few different colors of pipe cleaners, cut them into fourths to fit into the jar. Done! It's a quick, quiet activity that requires little help, assuming she can get them into the holes without bending the pipe cleaner. :) Unfortunately, washing didn't help with the garlic smell, so it does have quite a smell to it! Sophie doesn't seem to mind, though. :)
Here's the best shots I was able to get with my phone camera (all I had on me) during one of her times of playing with it a while back.

Great idea. I'll have to try this with Claire when she gets a little older.
I just don't recommend a garlic one. :) Try something that doesn't really have a smell or one that is easy to get rid of.
I used an old chili powder jar and did this with Liam. He really concentrated on it and played quietly for what seemed like forever (was most likely about 10 minutes). We also did one that had smaller holes with toothpicks, was a little harder and he kept breaking them but he enjoyed trying. We may use your idea of "shopping" for a specific color of objects this week.
